Exocet has pre-registered and Normandie solo is firmly in the calendar for 2014. Looks like we can either race IRC or HN - the ratings are very different in the two systems. Frederic reckons a Sunfast 3200 gives him over 7 minutes an hour in IRC and just four and a half in HN. But the downside is that the JPKs rate even better under HN!!! Philippe is scheming over how to work out an overall winner, for a prize of a garden gnome. Yes, really! And the good news is that the IRC class was limited to boats rating between 0.800 and 1.050, but they've increased the upper limit to 1.1 so that all the SORC boats are eligible - hoorah!

How do we find out how HN stacks up against IRC? If the relative differences between boats are not the same between systems it will be important to select the advantageous rating system. Also if two systems are in place during the event I guess we cannot compare results across the ratings. Seems that if we want to race against the guys we know then we need to agree which system we will all use.

From what I know the HN rating system is a bit more "discretionary" and less "scientific" than IRC. It helps to know the right "man" and to be at the bar to buy him a drink!!! I'll try and get a list of typical HN handicaps we can compare.

Here goes - my first post attempt! I think Phillippe intends to score both IRC and HN but I guess any SORC boats will race each other under IRC as well as any Frenchies with IRC ratings

There is a list on Facebook, looks like it may come from the website. 10 entries so far, 4 of whom are Brits - you, me, Jerry & Rob! French look to be racing under HN except Frédéric!

You may follow this Normandie Solo at www.NormandieSolo.orgToday, the nb of entries is 13 for a limit of 75, so there is still a chance that we see you crossing ´la Manche' for the race It seems that you are all interested by rating considerations There will be two fleets with two official results, one using HN (handicap national) the other one using IRC The way the ratings are calculated in HN comes from race results for all given types of boat, whereas in IRC weights and dimensions combined in formulas will give you a rating, but at the rnd of the day you get Time Correction Factors in both systems Just for fun, there will be unofficial race results using an unofficial Time Correction Factor (named SURF for Solo Unique Rating Factor) which combines HN and IRC factors + some other unique fancy factors which I might explain later You can see the SURF values on the Normandie Solo website for those boats that have already registered Yes the prize for the unofficial overall winner will probably be a golden garden gnome See you in Le Havre Philippe

FYI all the SORC boats had a HN factor. Except Ding Dong. That means we can race under this shit french system the HN. Nigel is 100% right: a beer and your handicap (under Osiris) is decreasing). Only for fun MAEVA had an Osiris HN handicap; 1 jenuary = 16.4. When I entered Normandy the Comitee said me 16.2. And 2 motns later at Celtic Cup my handicap was 16. That means in doing nothing (no beer no incentive no Yellow Flag... NOTHING AT ALL) I won 15 s per hour... Why? No body knows... In conclusion HN is unfair and I will sail under IRC. My handicap in IRC is higher than in HN. But I do not care!!!!! Sailing with friends loyaly is more important than race trickly.

FASTRAK has lodged her "probable" entry to the Normandie Solo. Apart from buying a drink for the right person at the bar, how do we apply for and get a HN Rating number???

I shall post a note on the NormandieSolo.org website explaining the way to get an HN/Osiris certificate Basically it consists in filling a form with some sail dimensions and things like that, pay a check of approx 50€ depending on the size of yur boat, then wait one or two weeks until it´s published on the Federation Française de Voile All details will be on the site in few days

To Nigel: the right person for Osiris is ... me. It cost you a beer in London boat show To Deb: same answer but change beer by candles supper
By the way: Sunfast 3200 (and 3600soon) have already a standard hn handicap. Osiris is only a HN equivalent (based on a ORC measurement system) for prototype or seriall boat modified. HN is a real shit stastistic system in which the weight is by example not measured ....

Get my 2014 HN OSIRIS certificat: first was 16.8 now after discussion 16.1. roughly the same than 2013 (16) with 4 m² more 100 kg less and a carbon rudder plus 500 kg in ineria momnet. In HN OSIRIS there is polar (VIPP) looks MAEVA 2014 is faster (40 s/hour) than MAEVA 2013. In IRC same rating with all modifications...
For Normandie things will race in HN to play with my little fellow the French fleet!
and you?
