Important update on Qualifying Passage Requirements and the 2014 FAL500 Race
At a meeting of the AZAB2015 Race Committee this week it was decided to reduce the requirement for the qualifying passage from 500 miles to 300 miles. This decision was taken after careful consideration and research into other race qualifying requirements. The committee determined that there had been many advances in design and technology of boats, equipment, and crew personal training standards since the race was started and that the 300 mile requirement better reflected today’s circumstances.
In addition this reduction in qualifying distance would allow qualification through participation in shorter distance short handed races in the 2014 season, such as the SORC Celtic Sea Challenge, without having to making any special concessions.
It is stressed that all the other requirements of the notice of race with regards to boat and crew participation are still extant. An amendment to the NoR will be issued in due course and this message will be posted on the website.
In view of this reduction in qualification distance the committee will therefore be very resistant to giving further dispensation for qualification and competitors should note the requirement to have completed the qualification voyage and certified as such by 1 May 2015 remains. This means of course that it is not possible to qualify for the race on the transit voyage to Falmouth for the start of the race.
It is stressed that the qualifying distance is an absolute minimum and the aim of the qualification is to primarily give to all competitors an opportunity to confirm that they are ready in all respects to participate in a long distance and probably arduous open ocean race. Competitors must therefore be honest with themselves in this regard and if they feel that a longer voyage is required as part of their own personal preparations then that should be undertaken. The disruption to the race to attend to an unprepared solo sailor or short handed crew is immense; this is especially trying and very unfair to the well prepared competitors who may have to disrupt or even terminate their participation in the race in order to render assistance. This has happened in previous races even with a 500 mile qualification; please ensure your personal preparations are thorough.
In the light of this decision and now with the opportunity for entrants to qualify for the AZAB 2015 thorough participation in an increased number of 2014 season events it has been decided not to run the FAL500 as an AZAB2105 qualifier.
