Hi all. I'm looking to buy a boat for Single and Shorthanded Sailing. I'd be thrilled to race solo (once I've bought and got the hang of the boat, so..... could be a while). I'd appreciate some advice re what to get. I am mid 50's and fit, but am aware that I am in a state of gradual decline! I've thought a bit and am looking at boats 29 - 33 feet LOA. I'd like a boat that's fun to sail (but also for Channel based cruising, and maybe further afield later, so sea kindly) and good for Single Handed sailing. Ideas so far are: Lighter: Jouet 920, Hustler SJ30, MG 30, GK 29, Dehler 31/32 Medium to Heavy weight: Sigma 33 including One Design, Sadler 32, Contessa 32, Konsort 29 and Sadler 29. These boats seem within my budget.
Are any of these unsuitable? I am drawn to the lighter boats. Is this a mistake?
What Sail Area is managable by a solo sailor? (up to 500 sq feet? or is this too high?). Thanks, Henry.
